Bermuda Grass Seeds Germination Time

Grow a Blackjack lawn from grass seed and enjoy the fast coverage and establishment. Blackjack bermuda seed produces a fine-textured, carpet-like, dark green grass turf. Over-seed an existing lawn with Blackjack, a top-quality variety, to add density and deep green color to your established warm-season turf. Bermudagrass is a warm season perennial species adapted to tropical and subtropical climates. Hulled Common Bermuda seed makes an excellent low maintenance, drought resistant lawn grass or pasture grass.

Bermuda vs Centipede SeedPosted by daviddsims on 6/6/17 at 8:32 am
I already have half of my yard in centipede sod but need to do another 5,000 sq ft that is still bare. I'm thinking of preparing the ground to put seed out but am still debating on what type of seed to use. This is my backyard and gets a lot of activity so that's why I was thinking of bermuda and I hear centipede takes longer to germinate. Anyone tried seeding any of these grasses?

Blackjack Bermuda Grass Seed Germination

Find out if this is the time to resod. Certain months are better than other. I did St. Augustine last summer and it all died!

Bermuda is very aggressive. I like it and I use it. However, a lot of people do not like it because it can be a little tough to control.

Bermuda seeds definitely germinate faster and better. It's an aggressive grass, so it holds up very well to high traffic areas, unlike centipede. I had a neighbor use centipede seed and it took almost a full year for his spots to be covered.

Go with Bermuda in full sun. It will handle high traffic and regenerates quickly. Sharpen your mower blades - you'll be using them a lot.

I only have Tifway 419 Bermuda in my yard. Working on my short game at all times is important.

I was looking at Princess 77 if I were to go with Bermuda.

Go with centipede. Bermuda gets too many weeds in it. Instead of seeding it buy some sod and chop it up with a shovel into smaller pieces and plug it. The grass will fill in quick.

Bermuda is unkillable in direct sun with plenty of rain
It spreads rapidly too. I like it a lot, but you mow a lot and it definitely gets into flower/plant beds.

I sodded like you suggested AND seeded my mom's yard for her and it worked great. Seed is so cheap.
And there are some fertilizers that kill the weeds and keep the grass going strong.

Yeah I can till, seed, and roll for 250 dollars versus 3k to sod.

I have a question for this thread.
What kind of grass would be best in Baton Rouge climate, for a side yard that sees little activity, has partial/low sun, and gets plenty of moisture?
My mom's side yard cannot seem to sustain grass and I told her I'd work on it eventually. Might end up having to put gravel and pavers down

Bermuda will need to be cut 2 to 3 times as much. It will need to be cut shorter for it to be at best health. I'd go centipede. Probabaly the best warm season lawn for average person

Well worth the effort and at that cost, it's a no brainer. Roll it smooth and uniform.

Centipede may take longer, but patience will pay off big time. Centipede hardly ever has to be mowed. Bermuda looks better but grows so fast. I also hate how Bermuda looks during the winter but centipede is about the same.

If the two mix together Centipede will eventually choke out the Bermuda. A long time ago a buddy of mine had his yard hydromulched with both Bermuda and Centipede seeds. The Bermuda grew in first but the slower growing Centipede eventually chocked it out. I prefer Centipede because it's easier to take care of and you don't have to fertilize it as much. It's called Lazy Man grass for a reason. I guess it's all in what you like. When I lived in Little Rock most everyone had Bermuda up there. I thought it made a pretty yard but it sure liked 4-5 applications of fertilizer to keep it good and green and I didn't like having to get out there and kill the weeds. My Centipede I only fertilize twice a year and I really don't have weed issues. My only complaint about Centipede is it doesn't get dark green. Zoysia was my favorite yard I ever had. I thought that grass looked sharp.

I noticed you can buy Zoysia seed but have never seen a yard with it in North LA.

St. Augustine does much better than Centipede in partial sun. If full sun, Centipede does great. I have St. Aug in shady areas and Centipede in full sun.
